Mariela and her admiration for the Ranquel people

Mariela y Jorge son una pareja de escultores de la provincia de La Pampa, parte de la Patagonia Argentina, que crean obras de arte inspirados por su entorno y la historia del Pueblo Ranquel.

Su pieza más emblemática es la “Comunidad Ranquel". Estas figuras representan familias de este pueblo originario, que conserva sus costumbres y lleva su historia con mucho orgullo incluso en el presente. Para los Ranqueles, la comunidad es el centro de la vida y su marco de contención, con fuerte presencia e integración en la sociedad pampeana.

Los artesanos utilizan materiales autóctonos: maderas que provienen de los postes que demarcaban las antiguas estancias de la provincia, que representan los límites del "hombre blanco" que los colonizó, cueritos de animales, lanas y tientos, que representan los tejidos artesanales o ponchos que constituyen sus vestimentas, y las cabezas de las distintas figuras, que realizan íntegramente en arcilla.

Estas esculturas son la manera que encuentran Mariela y Jorge de homenajear al Pueblo Ranquel, por el cual sienten cariño y admiración. 😍

Mariela and Jorge, from the province of La Pampa, part of Argentine Patagonia, are a couple of sculptors who create works of art inspired by their surroundings and the history of the Ranquel people.

Their most emblematic piece is the “Ranquel Community.” These figures represent families of this Indigenous people, who preserve their customs and carry their history with great pride even in the present day. For the Ranquel, the community is the center of life and their framework of support, with a strong presence and integration within the society of La Pampa.

The artisans use native materials: wood from the posts that marked the boundaries of the province's old ranches, representing the limits imposed by the "white man" who colonized them; animal hides, wool, and leather strips, representing the handwoven textiles or ponchos that make up their clothing; and the heads of the various figures, which they make entirely from clay.

These sculptures are Mariela and Jorge's way of paying homage to the Ranquel people, for whom they feel affection and admiration. 😍
