Objetos que enamoran

Ramón el Henry Moore diaguita
Women weavers of the Quebrada

Mabel is a living embodiment of culture, part of a clan of women weavers who preserve ancestral knowledge from the Quebrada de Humahuaca, in the province of Jujuy, northern Argentina.

Mabel, her sister, and her mother hand-weave accessories such as neck warmers, berets, Andean hats (chullos), gloves, and mittens, using exclusively pure llama wool in natural tones (white, light gray, dark gray, brown, beige, black). These women have a long tradition of learning the art of weaving since childhood. Upon receiving the wool, they wind it onto spindles, creating threads by hand before weaving.

They also create handcrafted pieces that are a tradition of their people, such as "chuspas," small woven bags in the shape of a llama, which they use to carry seeds to the fields and coca leaves to chew for altitude sickness, and "tulmas," woolen strands with pompoms at the ends, used to tie women's braids so they don't get in the way when they work or bend over. Currently, tulmas are used as colorful accessories to add an Andean touch to purses, bags, hats, curtains, furniture, or any other space.

Weaving is one of the most complex aesthetic expressions developed in this region. It is a completely handcrafted art form that requires hours of dedication and effort to create truly unique pieces.
